Rhoscolyn Presents…

Time to Add Some Rhoscolyn Seasonal Seaside Sparkle!

Dearest Jolly Ladies and Merry Gentlemen,

The countdown to Christmas is on! If you’re as busy as I am, these last minute ‘Rhoscolyn-related’ gift and festive feasting ideas and might come in handy; I really do hope so!

Find your Gift in Life!

Most of all, at this very special, but crazy time of year – enjoy yourselves, love each other, and have LOTS of fun!

Thank you all so much for your support throughout 2017, and for continuing to read my little Rhoscolyn musings! I really love what I do, and get great satisfaction from knowing that so many of you do too; thank you to all those who have let me know – honestly, it’s a pleasure!

Apologies for all the dreadful puns, I realise you’ve had a lot to put up with – however, I’m afraid I just can’t resist – and there’s no exception this time either! Blame my dad – or just think of it as preparation for all the cracker jokes to come!

Whatever you’re doing, and wherever you are – we send you glad tidings of comfort and joy from beautiful Rhoscolyn.

Nadolig Llawen & Winter Solstice Salutations…

With love,

Soph & Mark X

P.S. I’ve borrowed some of the images off the websites of the individuals/businesses mentioned – so only some of those included are mine!

Seasons Greetings from Rhoscolyn!

Soph’s Naughty & Nice Rhoscolyn Gift List (AKA The Magnificent 7):

1. The ‘Soar Like an Eagle’ Surprise!

Did you know that The White Eagle, Rhoscolyn’s very own ‘destination pub’, has gift vouchers for sale! As someone who’s been on the receiving end of just such a surprise, I can honestly tell you they’re always a treat…coming in especially handy during January – when spirits may be flagging, and funds a little depleted! Available from £25 upwards, it’s a great way to make someone’s day! They’re only sold on site – so grab some the next time you’re there! Well, don’t grab them exactly; Adrienne might not be very impressed if you did!

I Can Vouch for These!

Also, as well as their usual menu, for only £14.95 p/h (over the festive season – Monday to Friday, between 12 until 5pm) they’re offering a traditional ‘Christmas Cracker’ deal! And what about treating someone to a ticket for the pub’s New Year’s Eve party? For £37.50 p/h you get a 3-course meal, live entertainment, and a glass of fizz at midnight! Vegetarian options available. To find out more, and for other offers – go online, or contact them directly!

2. The ‘Having your Kayak and Eating it’ Experience!

If you’re struggling to find something ‘different’ for the sporty, or ‘difficult-to-buy-for’ member of the family (yes, we’ve all got one), what about booking them a guided walk with Andy from BActive@Rhoscolyn? And, what’s better, you could even join in the fun yourself? As a trained tourist and GeoMon guide for the Anglesey Geo-Park, Andy offers interesting walks that give a ‘new takeʼ on the local area. He’s happy to work around a schedule, or add the lucky person/people onto one of his advertised activities – and can even cater to specific interests, for example: history, natural history, Myth & Legend, and the area’s fascinating geological make-up. Depending on the size of a group, they can cost as little as £10 – £15 p/h!

Andy and Friends: Ffynnon Gwenfaen/St Gwenfaen’s Well – Rhoscolyn

If you’ve got more cash to ‘splash’, what about booking the energetic person you care about a kayaking, canoeing, or coasteering session? As well as being designed around ability, these can obviously be arranged for the time of year that suits best – and would certainly make for a memorable Rhoscolyn holiday memento!

3. The ‘Art of Giving’ Gift!

One of my favourite gifts, both to give and receive, are paintings or prints of the local area. Huw Jones, well known Anglesey artist, and ‘Rhoscolynite’ to boot, has an ever-growing collection to choose from – and can even frame them for you too!  Click on the link above to read more about him!

One of Huw’s many wonderful Welsh mountain inspired, winter works.

Whether it’s one of his reasonably priced prints or a full-blown original, get in touch to find out more. Although I adore everything he does, the Rhoscolyn scenes are my absolute favourite – and just perfect for someone as in love with the area as me! His unframed prints start off at around the £40 – £60 mark, and he takes commissions too!

4. The ‘Away in a Manger’ Momento!

Keeping with the theme, Anwen Roberts, located just up the road from Rhoscolyn (between Trearddur and Four-mile-Bridge), also produces wonderfully Welsh artworks. Inspired by a background in farming, her paintings contrast the beauty that surrounds us here on Anglesey, with the reality of her rural working life.

Two Hereford Bulls

Not only does she paint starkly stunning scenery – as well as capture the area’s awe-inspiring beauty – she also has a playful side; managing to portray those around her in a gently comical, but delightfully endearing way!

If you have a question, want to commission something, peruse her prints and prices, or purchase a painting – click on the link below. Her I giclee prints start from £30, and are limited to 20 per edition; they can also be supplied framed and/or mounted.

5. The ‘Unselfish’ Souvenir!

If you’ve been asked to provide one of the courses for a festive family gathering, but are rapidly running out of time (like me), why not drop by Holy Island Seafood to see what they’ve got on offer?

Fit for a King

As well as live lobsters and crabs generally being available, they can cook and dress them for you too! With lobster portions often on offer, and a yummy variety of ready-made fish and shellfish ‘cakes’ for sale, they’ll have done most of the work for you! Their potted crab and other crab-meat delicacies are delicious – and soon snazz-up a party-snack or starter; I’m thinking vo-au-vents! Oh, and their crab spring rolls make for an awfully nice plate of original hors d’oeuvre!

Seafood…and Eat it!

With the possibilities of what you can purchase changing daily, it’s the perfect place to pick up some last minute, mouth-watering goodies!  Their website can usually tell you what’s in and out of stock, as well how to order. However, a short walk from the pub towards the beach will take you right past their door – so make sure you pay them a visit next time you’re in the area! For scallops, sea bass, mackerel, mullet, and more – really push the boat out this Christmas – and, make a proper seaside meal of it!

The ‘Having a Field Day’ Token of your Affection!

If you’re more into ‘turf’ than ‘surf’, or just looking for extra tasty treats to finish off your seasonal feasting preparations – look no further! Specialising in raising native breeds of cattle, sheep, pigs, and game birds, Bodior’s agri-environmental stock-farm in Rhoscolyn has an en-site shop where you can purchase their produce.

County Pursuits

Not only this, they sell lovely local honeys, chutneys, sauces, speciality salts etc.  – and gift vouchers too! Plus, they offer delivery; email your order today (on the address shown below) – and get your meat box delivered tomorrow morning!

The friendly, family business – located within 700 acres of stunning scenery on the beautiful Bodior Estate – has conservation at its core. Just try their products – I think you’ll really taste the difference!

The farm’s huge diversity of habitats can even be enjoyed en route to the shop! Yes, you’ll pass lush pasture, areas of rough grazing, ancient woodlands, marshes – and more! Incidentally, if you want to experience this pretty setting for longer – then you’ll be delighted to know they also have holidays cottages available to rent on the estate…which brings me on to my next idea!

6. The ‘Abide with Me’ Bequest!

Yes, Menai Holiday Cottages have a variety of properties to rent in Rhoscolyn (and beyond); from cosy cottages (just perfect for that romantic winter, or early spring break) like: Cabbage Patch, Ty Capel, Plas Bach, Cyndal Bach, Garden Cottage, or the newest addition to the portfolio, pretty Maes Y Ggwyddau – to properties able to cater for larger parties including: Plas, Pant yr Hyman, Cae Llyn, and Cerrig! And don’t forget about the ‘6 sleepers’: beautiful Borth Arian, elegant Plas Esgob, ravishing Rhyd Y Bont Bach, marvellous Mountain View, perfectly placed Plas Uchaf, or Tymynydd Cottage and Ty Ynys with their terrific views!

Seasonal Silver Bay, Rhoscolyn

(Not much more than a hop skip and jump away from many of the properties mentioned above; especially Borth Arian!)

So, with budgets to suit everyone, delight your loved ones with a present ‘to write home about’! Or, why not book a little post-Christmas get-away (AKA a ‘walking off the winter weight-gain’ weekend) for yourself! Our own cute and quirky cottage, Ty Capel (right next door to where I’m writing this from now) has a lovely log-burner, and we offer breakfast (both traditional and continental): bookings available from 2 nights upwards! It sleeps 5, but works really well as a romantic retreat too.

For a face-to-face booking, you can even stop off at their Trearddur Bay based ‘shoffice’, where (as the name suggests) you can pick up some pretty presents too – including their own unique range, as well as gorgeous bits and pieces by local artists like my mum!

7. The ‘Let’s Go Completely Potty’ Prezzie!

Last, but certainly not least, you can’t go wrong with one of Pat Kayes original pottery pieces! Based just up the road in Four-mile-Bridge, Pat’s a popular, and colourful member of the local community. She sells her pretty pottery privately, as well as in the nearby Anderson Gallery; which is itself a treasure trove of decorative objects and interesting gifts.

Pat’s Pottery Present Ideas

Personally, I just love the way Pat’s cheeky humour and bold (northern) personality shines through her work! It’s this, as well as the coastal themes she often focuses on, and the local detail, that make for such meaningful, pretty, and (sometimes) wacky gifts!

One of Pat’s Inexpensive Rhoscolyn Pendants

From cheese and butter dishes, plates, bowls, jugs and mugs – to Rhoscolyn-related mementoes and cute keepsakes; present someone with a piece of Pat’s lovely pottery, and you’ll certainly make them smile! She’s also has a book published; all about Anglesey, and beautifully illustrated in her own unique style; another lovely local gift idea!

(With our Tearoom & Arts & Crafts Gallery…Coming (VERY) Soon!)

Lastly, look out for news regarding our Rhoscolyn Tearoom and Arts & Crafts Gallery in the New Year! Not only will be stocking and selling works by many (if not most) of the artists mentioned already, but – by this time next year – we’ll have lots more local treats and treasures to choose from!

Don’t quote me on this, but (fingers crossed) we’ll be opening for business sometime between February Half-term and Easter; wish us luck for 2018 – and please support us as soon as you can!

For budding artisans who are interested, competent creatures, professional painters and vanguard visual virtuosos…get in touch with me for details about exhibiting with us: sophiefionaclark@hotmail.co.uk

Thank you so much, Seasons Greetings – and Goodbye for Now!
